Apprenticeship Competition 2008—Honolulu, Hawaii

On July 12, 2008 Brother Brandon Bevans, a 3rd year apprentice with Lafarge Canada Inc., represented the Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ Local 919 at the 2008 Apprenticeship Competition held in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Brandon won the right to represent OPCMIA Local 919 by beating out other local apprentices in a preliminary competition.  Once selected Brandon spent several evenings and weekends of his own time practicing for the event.  This level of commitment sets a high standard for apprentices that follow as Brandon finished 3rd among 14 other competitors from Hawaii and California.

The competition includes forming, placing and finishing of stairs, a curb and gutter, a small slab sloping to a trench drain, and a flat patio with a curved radius and a stenciled finish.  Brother Bevans and the other competitors worked in 30+ degree heat and had 50-70 km/hr wind gusts to contend with.

The Operative Plasterers’ and Cement Masons’ Local 919 would like to thank Brother Brandon Bevans for his hard work during his apprenticeship and the way he represented Local 919 in competition.  We look forward to sending our best and brightest to the competition next year.
